What is the difference between Canon PG-540 and PG-540XL ink cartridges?

Should I buy Canon 540 or Canon 540XL?

Canon PG-540 ink cartridges come in two varieties; the standard capacity and the ‘XL’ high capacity, but what’s the difference?

Despite the name, both the Canon PG-540 and the PG-540XL have exactly the same external dimensions. The key difference between the two is the amount of ink which is contained within, and therefore, the number of pages which can be printed before changing the cartridge.

The standard capacity Canon PG-540 cartridge contains 8ml of ink, giving an approximate yield of 180 pages.

The high capacity Canon PG-540XL cartridge contains 21ml of ink, which give a page yield of approximately 600 pages.

Will Canon PG-540XL cartridges fit my printer?

This is a common question, as the name of the cartridge implies that it will be physically bigger than a standard ink cartridge.

In fact, a PG-540XL cartridge will fit any printer that takes the standard capacity cartridges. So, if you usually use Canon PG-540 ink cartridges, then you can also use the PG-540XL variety with out issue.

The same is also true of the colour CL-541XL ink cartridge.
